District Sign Technician I - IV

Essential Duties: District Sign Tech I:
- Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
- Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment.
- Measures and calculates amount of materials needed
- Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
- Operates a boom and bucket truck and specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
- Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
- Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck.
- Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
- Orders supplies and materials from district shop.
- Orders signs from the regional sign shop.
- Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
- Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
- May assist in scheduling and assigning work.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications
- Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
- Assists in scheduling and assigning work.
- Serves as a lead worker by advising, training, and instructing employees in shop policies and procedures; acting as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.

- District Sign Tech I- None
- District Sign Tech II- 1 year in sign installation and repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- District Sign Tech III- 2 years in sign installation and repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- District Sign Tech VI- 3 years in sign installation and repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "N" endorsement at time of application

- Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates and expenses

- Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
- Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
- Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

Annual Salary Ranges:
District Sign Tech I (A16) - $40,918 - $61,130
District Sign Tech II (A17) - $42,976 - $64,469
District Sign Tech III (A18) - $45,521 - $71,055
District Sign Tech IV (A19) - $48,244 - $76,028
This position is for a District Sign Tech I, II, III, or IV. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors and based on business needs.
