Mechanical Engineer
Cognex Corporation
Dynamic, motivated, and hands-on mechanical engineer to support the product design team developing competitive future vision systems
Essential Functions
- Good understanding and experience with the development of mechanical design, manufacturing technologies, and embedding of electro-mechanical systems which may include vision systems, sensors, motors, enclosures, mounts and/or the integration of illumination, imager optics and electronics.
- Designs of parts and small sub-systems.
- Performance tests to check if the design meets specifications.
- Model interfaces with electronic and optical systems. Model thermal properties of the mounts and their interfaces. Model the design response to environmental shock and vibration.
- Definition of requirements and specifications for systems and components.
- Creation of drawings and specifications for optical and mechanical parts.
- Hands-on mentality.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Actively involved in engineering discussions. Ability to pro-actively communicate clearly, both orally and in writing in order to be actively involved in cross-functional discussions.
- Solid problem-solving skills for mechanical problems on a (sub-)system level. Strong attention to detail with the ability to debug, root cause, qualify, and modify electro-mechanical assemblies. Can effectively implement when given design direction.
- Knowledge of – or experience with mechanical production technologies, particularly injection molding, die casting, vacuum forming
- Possess strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to multitask multiple projects with quality and efficiency in a dynamic and fast-moving industry.
- Innovative and creative-minded individual who looks to continuously improve and challenge the ways things are done.
- Independent self-starter as well as a conscientious team player. Solid interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with internal stakeholders to achieve project deliverables.
- Experience creating and maintaining BOMs, mechanical drawings, and assembly/process documentation.
- Exposure working with vendors for custom components and sourcing specific hardware for designs.
- Ability to use mechanical simulation tools (strength or thermal) or experience with designing optical or electrical systems.
- Experience prototyping your own designs using various fabrication equipment: mills, lathes, CNC systems, hand tools, 3D printers, laser cutters.
Minimum Education and Work Experience Required
- Typically requires 2-4+ years of mechanical product/design engineering experience or relevant technical experience. Experience with 3D CAD system preferably SolidWorks or equivalent.
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferred), technical discipline (i.e. Robotics Engineering, Industrial Design), or relevant equivalent professional experience.
- Must possess English language proficiency as a minimum for the role.
