Vertragstyp: Praktikum
Who We Are ...

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes a reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, test infrastructure and digitization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. Do you want to join us in shaping a sustainable future?

This team needs your support ...

You will be part of the group »Test and Method Development« at our site in Bremerhaven. At present, our team consists of five employees. With the foundation of the working group »Sustainable Maritime Mobility«, a close cooperation between the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences and the Fraunhofer IWES is being established under joint management. The teams in Leer and Bremerhaven work closely together to focus on wind propulsion systems, design concepts and scientific studies for emission-free shipping. Become an active member of the team; we are keen to hear your ideas! As an international oriented IWES-team, we highly appreciate an open exchange, whether this be in German or English. Respectful cooperation is also very important to us. You are wondering what you can bring to the team?

What You Will Do

These duties await you ...

Based on the overarching question of how large Flettner rotors can technically be built, you will develop Flettner rotors in 2-3 size variants for use on ships of different sizes. In doing so, you will draw on an existing pre-design methodology as well as design principles. You will determine the mechanical loads acting on the main subsystems of the rotor during operation and, based on this, investigate possible failure mechanisms of your design. You will pay particular attention to the bearings used and the material of the rotor, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of aluminium compared to fiber composite materials. You will work on verifying static strength, fatigue strength, buckling and natural frequencies. To complete these tasks, you will use tools such as Siemens NX, Bearinx online, Ansys and, if required, Adams. You will also develop cost modeling in order to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the variants. In this way, you will gain a sound understanding of the technical and economic limits and potential of Flettner rotors of different sizes. Sounds like a lot? Do not worry, you will be supported by your colleagues in the team.

What You Bring To The Table

What is your background?

You are studying Mechanical Engineering in the field of Aviation or Shipping. Do you have knowledge of design and machine elements? Are you proficient in CAD and maybe even have first experiences in FEA? Do you understand and speak English? Great, we are looking forward to your application!

What You Can Expect

What we can offer you ...

We offer various opportunities to join us as a student. Whether it is an internship, where you gain a comprehensive insight into the areas of work, or the role of a student assistant, which is easy to combine with your studies. Are you looking for an exciting topic for your thesis and do you want to delve deeply into a topic scientifically? Together, we will find the right path for you! We know that studying can also be very demanding and requires a certain level of flexibility. That is no problem here, as – in agreement with your colleagues – you can decide flexibly what days and hours to work. Temporarily, you can even work remotely, depending on the job.
